The City of Vincent has given in principle support for a new public piazza space on the corner of Mary Street and Beaufort Street. Click on the link above for an initial artist’s impression of what the future space could look like. The City wants to engage with and get feedback from local residents and businesses on the idea. They would also like to trial a “Pop Up Piazza’ for 2 weeks to test how the space would affect traffic movements and car parking.
Get Involved in the 2 Week Pop Up Community Piazza
What makes a great public space? People!
Calling all community groups and creative thinkers! We need your ideas for what we can do during the 2 week trial to make it an interesting and vibrant place for people. It is a big space and there is lots of room for innovative and interesting uses. Some initial ideas are:
- DJs or bands
- Street performers
- Kids activities
- Face painting
- Pop up movie night
- Artists working on site
- Market stalls
- Coffee van
- School or church fund raising BBQs
- Pop up library
- Heritage talks
- Outdoor piano
The City of Vincent and Beaufort Street Network will be working on ideas to make the space interesting and comfortable. For example – seats, planters, decorations and adding colour.
The City of Vincent will also be providing information about the future Mary Street Piazza and asking for your feedback on how to make it work well.
The 2 week trial will be launched on 25 July 2014. Let’s us know if you have any ideas or want to get involved.
Worried About Traffic and Parking?
The idea of a parklet or piazza on a side street is not new. Here are some are some smaller examples on side streets off major roads in Melbourne – Brunswick Street, Fitzroy and Lygon Street, Carlton. This shows that it can be done fairly easily.
