What Have We Done So Far?

Here’s a quick summary of what we have done.

Better Beaufort Action Plan

The Network developed a community action plan for a Better Beaufort Street. It’s an exciting and unique place, but it could be even better. Times are changing and the street faces a range of challenges. The best way to tackle the challenges is to have a plan, prepared in cooperation with local businesses, local governments and the community. Barrel Planters

The corner of Field and Walcott Streets is a visible location with high traffic volumes and growing numbers of pedestrians. It serves as an entry point to the Beaufort Street precinct. The corner was a bit of an eyesore, unloved and attracted rubbish and broken glass.

The Network thought the site could do with some love and attention. This is what it looks like now –

The barrels bring some life, colour and greenery to the corner. The local businesses and the Network will help maintain the space.

‘Wayfinding’ Stencils

Beaufort Street is attracting more visitors from interstate and overseas. We need to improve what we offer and make it easier for people to find their way around and see the local sites. A series of ‘wayfinding’ stencils have been installed on the footpath to help visitors find new places and important things like train stations. Sometimes we need more than an i-Phone.

This garden replaced weeds around a street tree. It had a budget of $0 and was completed by one person in 30 minutes.

Community Engagement

The Better Beaufort Action Plan was prepared based on feedback received from local businesses and the community, including:

  • 130 survey responses
  • A community forum on 5 March 2013
  • A laneway event on 11 April 2013
  • A community workshop on 2 July 2013

Curtin University students also ran a series of workshops to help inform the action plan. This included an evening event in Lois Lane which really helped to bring life to this great little space.

Streetscape Audit

A team of urban planners walked every centimetre of the street to audit the existing conditions. This detailed streetscape assessment is provided at the back of the action plan if you want to have a look.

The streetscape audit will help assess what is working and what needs to be improved. It will help guide future actions and decision-making.

Painted Laneway

Locals painted the laneway between Jackson’s Restaurant and Orno Interiors in March 2013. The painted laneway brought life and colour to a forgotten and under-appreciated space. This was the first time a laneway had been painted this way in Perth. The City of Vincent later sought community input to give the forgotten laneway a name.
